Live Match Coverage
21 mins: Fierce Action while Each Side Battle
21st minute: Brisbane push forward to the midfield and almost pierce the defensive line via Reece Walsh and Gehamat Shibasaki on the left flank. A further excellent kick from Adam Reynolds on the final play keeps Brisbane's momentum. For three tackles they stay on the front foot, but a couple of offloads free the rapid Jahrome Hughes, and when he's brought down on the 40-meter line, a six-again is given for holding the player. Melbourne are finding their flow, and William Warbrick breaks through the defense, followed by Coates making a dash – only for Reece Walsh to make high contact with a shoulder! Is that a sin-binning? No, rules Atkins, because Coates was dropping low. The fullback is under review regardless, and Melbourne resume their onslaught.
19 mins: Munster Leads Storm Attack
19th minute: Munster is busy as Melbourne charge quickly down to their 30-meter line. Down the right, Jahrome Hughes kicks high, Katoa rushes up, but in the marking contest, the second-rower loses the ball, and the Broncos finally get a breather.
18 mins: Storm Exert Pressure on Broncos
18th minute: Melbourne perform a textbook set from the kickoff and apply plenty of pressure on Deine Mariner with the final kick. Again, the Broncos fail to reach near halfway in response, and Adam Reynolds is forced to kick long to keep his team in touch.
17th Minute: Injury for Melbourne
17th minute: It’s not all good news for the Storm. Howarth has been replaced due to a groin injury. Wishart is on in his place.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 12-6 Broncos (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Brilliant, just brilliant. After consecutive set restarts, the Broncos are flagging. From tackle three close to the line on the left, Melbourne move the ball infield for two passes before Jahrome Hughes drops the ball onto his toe and the onrushing Eliesa Katoa times his run perfectly to pounce on the bobbling ball and stand to celebrate his team’s second try!
From just to the right of the posts, Nick Meaney kicks his second goal.
12 mins: Melbourne Show Exciting Attack
12th minute: Melbourne appear thrilling in attack. They have pace from the play-the-ball, grunt from the forwards, and crisp hands from the outside players. A dangerous attack concludes with a kick high to the left side that is knocked on by Reece Walsh and leads to a penalty to the Melbourne for an obstruction on Xavier Coates. The Storm decline the penalty goal and get to work under the posts. They get a set restart – and a further one – as Cameron Munster dances left and right.
10 mins: Tense Action
10 mins: Stefano Utoikamanu has delivered as promised early and his carry from the kickoff enables Harry Grant, then Ryan Papenhuyzen, to dart from acting half. Jahrome Hughes boots from 40 meters and Walsh secures the bomb on his 10-meter line. The Broncos carry less penetration in this set and get lucky on the final play when Ben Hunt's pass to Reynolds is dropped. Not to worry, the experienced playmaker kicks superbly to force Xavier Coates to retreat and forces the Storm winger to sprint from his try line. The Brisbane are overzealous with their pursuit, hitting the winger with a high tackle, and Melbourne can kick for attacking field position.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 6-6 Broncos (Nick Meaney, 8)
From the scrum, Utoikamanu powers forward to the 20m line. Then, from quick ball off the back, all of Melbourne’s big names handle the ball as they move it out to the right hand side until Meaney cuts inside, runs at an angle at high speed, and carves through a weak defensive line to score for an immediate response!
The centre recovers to kick the goal. We have a shootout!
7th Minute: Teams Trade Possession
7th minute: Both sides trade cautious plays around midfield, but then the Brisbane look to expand on their left, only to fail to find Shibasaki with the ball. Warbrick advances quickly and forces a knock on for his troubles.
5 mins: Ideal Opening for Brisbane
5th minute: That is the perfect beginning for the Broncos, taking the lead before the Storm have even handled the ball, in an attack led by both Payne Haas and Walsh. The Storm might be somewhat frustrated at the referee awarding such an quick infringement, but they were clearly breached by the blistering Brisbane offense.
CONVERTED TRY! Storm 0-6 Brisbane (Deine Mariner, 3)
After kicking downfield, the Broncos begin their attack. Melbourne give away a set restart for offside, and in no time the ball is in the red zone. Reece Walsh positions himself? Lurking on the right side, drawing in Howarth, standing his ground, then somehow offloading to Deine Mariner on his outside. The outside back steps inside, crosses the try line, then barely remains in the playing area as he runs around to touchdown beneath the goalposts.
A review occurs before Reynolds dabs over the conversion, but the video official upholds the referee's call. The venue is erupting to the sound of jubilant fans.
2 mins: Quick Penalty
2nd minute: Jensen, not Haas, makes the first hit-up of the match and Melbourne are quick to tackle… but only a few plays later the Melbourne concede the first penalty of the game for Grant interfering with Payne Haas on the floor. Brisbane immediately on the attack.
