Moscow's Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Rockets Target Western Lviv City in Sustained Attack

In the early hours of Sunday, the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, typically considered as among the most secure locations in the country, endured one of its most sustained strikes since the start of Vladimir Putin's comprehensive invasion.

Over a five-hour period, Moscow's Iranian-designed drones and rockets targeted the city, located about 70 kilometers from the Polish border. Powerful blasts were audible from the city center, a designated UNESCO heritage location.

Victims and Damage Across Ukraine

Nationwide, no fewer than five people lost their lives – four in the Lviv region and one in the Zaporizhzhia city. In addition, 14 people sustained injuries. Included among the victims was a teenage girl, who died along with three other family members when their home was struck.

Part of Lviv was experienced power outages, as reported by the city leader. Significant blazes broke out in various locations, including a industrial zone in the southern part of the city.

While the acrid smell of smoke and fumes engulfed the city, the local administration head encouraged inhabitants to keep windows shut and refrain from going outside or to use protective masks or breathing apparatus.

Regional Reactions and Defense Actions

Polish military aviation reported it scrambled jets and implemented defensive measures to secure its airspace after a recent violation by Russian decoy drones. Additionally, there were multiple drone sightings last week in European Union nations such as Germany and Denmark.

  • Over fifty rockets and about 500 attack drones were utilized in the attack.
  • Armaments comprised cruise missiles, Shahed-type drones and Kinzhal ballistic missiles.
  • Several areas were impacted, including Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia oblast, Odesa, Kherson area, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv territory.

Call for International Assistance

The nation's leader urged international partners to help boost air defences and to impose a restricted airspace – a measure that to date been approached cautiously.

"An independent cessation of hostilities in the skies is possible – and it is precisely that which could open the way to real diplomacy. America and Europe must take action to compel Russian leadership cease," the statement noted.

In recent days, Russian forces has targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing electricity outages in multiple areas, a tactic repeated in the lead-up to colder months for the past three years. At the same time, Ukrainian forces continues to strike oil production facilities deep inside Russia with its domestically developed long-range drones.

Community Consequences

The city was in the midst of the yearly Lviv BookForum, with authors and attendees gathered in the city for one of the largest book festivals in eastern Europe.

Alongside Ukrainian writers, such as poets Julia Musakovska and Artur Dron, there were global participants including UK-based Forward prizewinning author Fiona Benson, and, joining by video link, the Booker Award recipient Bernardine Evaristo, and the Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk.

By Sunday morning, ash was still falling on the roads of the city, as exhausted residents ventured out and participated in religious gatherings. The damaged wreckage of a Russian drone rested on a pavement near a block of flats, cordoned off with warning barriers.
