{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be permitted to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the regulatory authority
"On lap three, track officials were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were rescinded and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred subsequent to that time"
