British Expands Methanol Poisoning Warning Roster with Eleven Destinations
The UK Foreign Office has added an additional eleven new destinations to its public warning list concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.
This revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol contamination.
Only a few weeks ago, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following a number of high-profile events like the deadly loss of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?
Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol often employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for drinking.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.
Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to detect.
Authorities' Advice for Travelers
Government minister the minister emphasized that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of methanol contamination.
"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, opt for reputable establishments and avoid homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister advised.
"In case something feels off, such as a headache that's far more intense than typical or sight issues – get medical help immediately."
The entire register of nations identified as carrying a threat of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
