If you're craving a horror-slasher film that provides dumb fun while making you wince, it's likely Bone Lake is on your attention. This new scary film from filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan arrived at cinemas on Oct. 3 with an ridiculous concept and a provocative name to match.

A Mix of Levity and Terror

With a name like Bone Lake and an introductory scene featuring characters running completely nude through the forest—only to be hit with a bow in vulnerable spots—it's safe to assume there's plenty of humor all through the story. Additionally, the final scenes, which depict the protagonists exhausted and injured yet chuckling madly in unison, exude a tone of macabre comedy.

You would need to discover a reason to laugh about, as well, if you experienced what Diego and Sage go through in Bone Lake. A couple full of relationship problems from the get-go—poor dialogue, unfulfilling intimacy, an unequal share of money pressures, you name it—their connection is strained when a second pair, Will and the character Cin, invade their love-filled retreat.

A Dark Shift

What initially appears to be a contrast of opposites between the duos—Diego and Sage are uncomfortable and working-class, whereas Will and Cin have a rich, lavish way of life and seem to be kissing on all available spots—takes a dark turn as the getaway progresses. Will and Cin play on Sage and Diego's doubts in their union. They circulate falsehoods and talk about the other couple, stating to be aware of an infidelity and other internal drama.

The insecurities erupt in the biggest way conceivable when Diego and Sage discover that Will and Cin are not merely here at Bone Lake by mistake: they own it and have been attracting duos to the grounds in order to get them to be unfaithful on their significant others. For what purpose? As Cin and Will are in fact brother and sister. Subsequent to their incestuous affair was discovered by their mother and father and they were split apart against their will, they chose to punish everyone else (including their relatives). Since the society turned against them just because of their choice of love, then they'll oppose the everyone. Will and Cin's aim is to show a reflection to all the duos they finally end up murdering, in an endeavor to show that their love is just as valid (or wrong) as the connection of these different pairs they try to split.

Unforeseen Strengths

However, what Cin and Will overlook is that Sage and Diego, despite their failure to talk with one another, deeply value and love each other. It required having a killer pair try to break them up and murder them to see it. While it appears grim, it isn't played that way. Bone Lake's tone is closer to satire than genuine horror.

The story ends with Diego and Sage joining forces to get away from Will and Cin's killer motives. Interestingly is that while, at the start of the movie, you perceive a huge gap in the bond between Diego and Sage in contrast to Will and Cin, by the end, Bone Lake turns it on its head. Will and Cin go their own ways to pursue Diego and Sage, but Sage and Diego are communicating better by this point. They join forces to slay the character Will with a cutting device. They then confront the character Cin, who meets her grisly end at the depths of Bone Lake's lake—but not before Diego takes back the engagement band destined for the character Sage that Will had taken and given to Cin.

Consequences

After all the chaos of their double murder, smeared with gore and flesh, Sage and Diego are seated on the end of a craft. Paradoxically, this is the nearest they've been since the beginning of the story, given that all their relationship troubles have been laid out for the two to see, and all they have remaining are their injured and sore physiques. To reinforce their fresh bond and intimate understanding of one another, the character Diego reaches over to place the marriage symbol on the character Sage's finger and, when she rotates to inspect it in the light, the two start chuckling.

It's easy to understand the reason: When, the character Will proposed to the character Cin, it was a perfect, loving scene. Whereas the character Diego repeats the act for the character Sage, they've just gotten away from a brutal nightmare. Nonetheless, the character Diego's engagement question to Sage is not grounded in deceit, simply the awareness that they've come out of the most terrible experience of their existence and, despite everything, they yet desire to pass the future together together.

Creator's Perspective

However, as filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan clarifies, the finale doesn't necessarily mean a fairy-tale ending for Sage and Diego.

"If you go through that situation with someone where you face a murderous bloodbath, how can you emerge from that? What do you do as a person? Therefore I aimed to depict all of the instants there in unison where it's this euphoria of 'thank goodness' and 'are we getting what we've always wanted, but what the fuck occurred?
